BASED ON THE TRUE STORY OF THE VIETNAM VET WAR HERO, KNOWN AS THE “AMERICAN GANGSTER” WHO RAN A COVERT CIA OPERATION AND EMERGED AS VIETNAM’S ‘OSKAR SCHINDLER’
A great historical fictional work on ‘Vietnam’s mobbed-up late 1960s – 1970s Saigon, Pearl of the Orient, Vietnam, “American Gangster – Operation Beaucoup Dinky Dau”
In the best-selling tradition of the world’s master historical fiction storytellers, Mario Puzo’s, “The Godfather”; Tim O’Brien’s “The Things They Carried”; Winston Groom’s Forrest Gump; Victor Hugo’s, “Les Misérables”; Leo Tolstoy’s “War and Peace”; Norman Mailer’s, The Naked and The Dead; Gore Vidal’s Lincoln: A Novel; and Graham Greene’s “The Quiet American”
Steve Murphy, Network TV and Documentary Film Producer, Writer, and Combat Vietnam Veteran, tells the extraordinary story of a never before told, top secret covert CIA operation, known only as “OPERATION BEAUCOUP DINKY DAU”, that served as the unofficial covert Logistics operation to the CIA’s Phoenix Montagnard fighters, fighting the North Vietnamese forces during 1968-1973.
“This I-can’t-believe-it’s-not-fiction” tale has it all: a Marlboro- Man handsome Vietnam War Hero, a parade of impossibly gorgeous women, sex, spies, copious quantities of booze, drugs, and enough violence to take Arnold Schwarzenegger and his Terminator scriptwriters through several more sequels. It’s both a rip-roaring expose and harrowing.
It’s the story of the underbelly of the Saigon metropolis like few others. Corrupt Generals, shady Politicians, gangsters, prostitutes, bootleggers, opium addicts, jazz musicians, deserters, black marketeers, and your run of the mill criminals, murderers, thieves, and con artists….
Casting light on the Federal Government’s links with organized crime and how a highly decorated American MAT Team Advisor Vietnam Veteran, Johnnie Walker, known in Saigon, as “The America Gangster”, became Saigon’s most successful Criminal Mastermind, as well as the most influential “unofficial” Defense Attaché Office (DAO) “Contractor” to the CIA’s Phoenix Program, and the owner of the famous supper club and casino, “Beaucoup Dinky Dau”, and who had unparalleled connections leading all the way up to Vietnam’s Presidential palace and the CIA.
It’s a story most Americans have never heard of and shines a new and disturbing light on the role of the United States in the creation of communist Vietnam, and their treatment of the indigenous tribes that fought for the CIA’s Phoenix Program.
Johnnie Walker dominated Saigon’s War profiteering, Black Market, Money Laundering, and Drug Trafficking for all the major Vietnamese Crime Lords Generals in Saigon, as well as for South Vietnam’s President Nguyễn Văn Thiệu, and Air Marshall /South Vietnam’s VP, Nguyễn Cao Kỳ.
His astounding metamorphosis from criminal mastermind to Vietnam’s ‘Oskar Schindler’ began in 1968 when he discovers that Washington intends to abandon his friends and former MAT Team CIA Phoenix program Montagnards, “The Yards”, fighters that he’d fought side by side with as a MAT Team Advisor in Pleiku. He loved “The Yards” and the War Orphans the Yards took care of, and he was going to make sure he did the “Right Thing” for them.
It was an amazing turnabout for the once money-hungry Walker, because even though he did not begin his journey as a hero, by the time the war was winding down, he became one. He used his cunning to bend the system to help him and his over 600 Yards and 100 Orphans escape Vietnam. He was strong in the face of constant danger and double-cross, and he placed the well-being of The Yards and Orphans above his own well-being.
Based on real historical events, the suspense and intrigue of the story carries larger-than-life qualities and heightened reality. It’s about 90% historical basis and 10% creative license, but it adds up to 100% spellbinding story. It has more political intrigues, more suspense, more intense psychological analysis, and more technological know-how than anything Tom Clancy or Robert Ludlum could fantasize about.
And it has something else besides: It’s based on a true story, depicts the courage and shrewdness of an unlikely savior, a man who is a flawed mixture of hedonism and decency and who, in the presence of unutterable evil, transcends the limits of his own humanity, and the pragmatic triumph of good over evil, a triumph in eminently measurable, statistical, unsubtle terms.
Set in his adopted hometown, Saigon, Vietnam, where he spent over six years, American Gangster – Operation Beaucoup Dinky Dau, is the book that Steve Murphy has been building up to for his whole career. From its opening fusillade to its astonishing conclusion, it’s that rarest of literary creations: a book that combines spectacular elegance of craft with a kinetic wallop as fierce as the Monsoons and Tsunamis bringing torrential rains to the Pearl of the Orient.
They were here before us.

The Autobiography of Jimmy Lee.
Jimmy Lee has led some sort of life!
He had a start in life few would have survived; he was taken into care at three years old and by the time he was eleven he had moved home ten times and attended nine different schools.
His early adolescence was hard by any standards. At fourteen, he ran away to join the Royal Navy and was sent, along with 2000 other boys, to the notorious HMS Ganges at Shotley, in Suffolk, a training establishment where a harsh regime held sway.
He had the misfortune to be placed under the care of two particularly brutal instructors, prone to drunkenness, whose continual bullying and abuse proved too much for his emerging free spirit.
Jim fought back and deserted on numerous occasions. Among his many punishments, he suffered ‘cuts’, a particularly brutal form of naval punishment. The next six years passed with regular naval detentions in the Royal Naval Detention Quarters, Portsmouth, involving exhausting routines and solitary confinements, which ended with a twelve month sentence in the infamous HM Military Prison Corradina, Malta, after which he was dismissed from the Service and returned to civilian life.
Then his troubles really began!
Winner of 20 book awards, SHOT DOWN is set within the framework of World War II in Europe and recounts the dramatic experiences of each member of a ten man B-17 bomber crew after their plane, piloted by the author’s father, was knocked out of the sky by German fighters over the French/Belgium border on February 8,1944.
Some men died. Some were captured and became prisoners of war. Some men evaded capture and were missing in action for months before making it back to England. Their individual stories and those of the courageous Belgian people who risked their lives to help them are all different and are all remarkable.
Even before the dramatic battle in the air and the subsequent harrowing events on the ground, the story is informative, insightful, and captivating. Prior to the fateful event, the book covers the crew’s training, their journey to England, what life was like on base as well as in London and the English countryside, and the perils of flying combat missions over occupied Europe and Germany.
Through personal letters, oral and written accounts, declassified military documents, and interviews – all from people who took part in the events that happened over 70 years ago (even the German Luftwaffe pilot who shot down the Susan Ruth) – the stories come alive. Adding to the feeling of “being there”, are more than 200 time period photographs interspersed throughout the book.
To add background and context, many historical facts and anecdotes about and surrounding World War II are entwined throughout the book so that the reader has a feel for and understanding of what was occurring on a broader scale. SHOT DOWN is an account about brave individuals, featuring pilot Howard Snyder, set within the compelling events of the greatest conflict in world history.
An American family in crisis and how they deal with it. An aging WWII veteran with dementia, a pregnant daughter bein stalked by her meth using boyfriend, and a preteen becoming a teenager are what we see. Behind the scenes, a greater crisis is gathering as an old enemy of one of the family gets ready to take revenge from his post as manager of a security firm contracted to the NSA. By the end of the story you will be wondering who has your information and what are they going to do with it. Available in both Kindle and paperback.
The Warramunga’s War is a sweeping narrative of the friendship that forms between a young Australian army officer, Jamie Munro, and an educated half-caste Warramunga aboriginal NCO, Jack ‘Jacko’ O’Brien, during the Syrian campaign against the Vichy French in World War II. Jacko rescues a wounded Jamie after which they are conscripted in Cairo by MI6. Here, Jamie and Jacko learn about the seamy side of war in counterespionage as they track down German spies. The principal fictional characters interact with actual historical figures and events throughout the story.
As the desert war escalates to the west of Cairo, the MI6 team confuses the enemy with misleading radio messages using German codes and using local entertainers as undercover agents. On one of his day leaves, Jacko meets a beautiful young Syrian-French girl and a strong romantic bond forms between the two during his time in Cairo.
Following the end of the desert war, Jamie and Jacko are assigned to wartime intelligence work in Southeast Asia. After the end of the Pacific war, they initiate the Darwin operations of the CIS, the Commonwealth Investigation Service. On the trail of two suspected wartime German agents, they discover the agents have formed a dangerous criminal gang with an individual they had known during their time in Cairo. The tracking skills of the Warramunga are needed to finally catch up with the murderous gang in Western Australia’s Kimberley region.

His long-ago lover brings a cryptic letter to Paris, pulling Eddie Grant reluctantly into a web of intrigue and death — but giving him one slim chance to find the terrorists who murdered his family seven years before.
The letter sparks a dangerous quest across Paris, the Loire Valley, and the gleaming beaches of the Florida Gulf Coast for the most valuable Nazi loot that remains missing, a famous Raphael self-portrait from the early 16th century. The painting and the crates of bullion that accompanied it were intended to finance the Fourth Reich, or so the rumors said.
Jen Wetzmuller, daughter of his late father’s World War II colleague in American Army intelligence, found the letter after her father was run down by a car in the streets of Sarasota. For Eddie, it brings the long-cold case of his family’s murder back to life.
Its clues propel him from his Paris home to Florida, where he barely escapes with his life. Then it’s back home, to burrow into the darkest reaches of the German occupation.
Along the way, he and Jen restart the brief, fiercely passionate affair that he abandoned, to his regret, 20 years before.
Most of all, Treasure of Saint-Lazare is a novel of Paris.
The painting, Portrait of a Young Man, remains missing, although the Polish government said recently that it still exists and is in a safe place.
“Bravo!” (Ronald Rosbottom, author of When Paris Went Dark)
“An exceptionally well written book with a fast-paced story line and many plot surprises.” (Connield, Amazon reviewer)
A “fast-paced thriller spanning the globe from Paris to the states.” (Carole P. Roman, Amazon reviewer)
“I read it once and then waited a week and read it again.” (Amazon reviewer)
